Clinic Information

Tokyo Birth Clinic aims to propose a new form of childbirth in which everyone is a "unique" individual, and that difference fosters diversity. Tokyo Birth Clinic is a new and unprecedented obstetrics clinic that re-examines the life event of pregnancy and childbirth—the most significant in life—from the perspective of "diversity" and "self-determination," accompanying patients on their journey to achieve "childbirth that is true to themselves." We strive to be more than just a medical institution. We aim to be a "place that accompanies you through life" and a "place you want to return to." We achieve this by offering a lifestyle-proposal-oriented obstetrics experience that appeals to your "sensibilities," with furnishings, interior design, dining, and services provided in various areas of the clinic to unleash the patient's creativity.

Clinic Philosophy

“Gentle”, “Strong”, “Clear”

Gentle

Our primary philosophy is to fulfill the wishes of our patients and their families. To this end, we constantly strive to treat our patients with kindness and compassion. Simultaneously, cooperative collaboration among staff from different professions is essential to achieving the highest level of hospitality. Although our daily work is busy, the philosophy of “Gentle” also encourages our staff to show compassion for one another and to volunteer to assist colleagues in need.

Strong

To meet the demands of our patients, our specialized staff must be fully prepared in terms of physical stamina and knowledge. It is our mission not only to study the latest advancements in medicine, which progress daily, but also to mentor our junior staff members to enhance their capabilities. “Strong” embodies the desire for each individual to grow stronger, making the organization stronger as a whole.

Clear

We promise to provide high-quality medical care safely. We understand that there may be uncertainties and concerns regarding your own body. We constantly strive to provide clear and detailed explanations to our patients. Our staff will clearly explain anything you are unsure about—whether it pertains to pregnancy, childbirth, the fields of obstetrics, gynecology, and anesthesiology, or our clinic’s system and fees. We respect our patients’ rights and want them to make decisions only after receiving sufficient explanation. Furthermore, to ensure everyone understands what kind of clinic Tokyo Birth Clinic is, we will clearly and transparently communicate our charitable activities for social contribution and our efforts to improve staff working conditions. This is the intention behind “Clear.”

Clinic Overview and Features

Background and Founding Concept

In recent years, the number of medical institutions handling deliveries has been decreasing (※1), necessitating an environment in which pregnant women can give birth with peace of mind, given the limited options available. Tokyo Birth Clinic was founded with the concept of a “meticulously designed, premium space that does not feel like a hospital.” Based on the keywords “a convincing birth, not necessarily the ‘correct’ one” and “ten people, ten ways to welcome a new life,” we were established as a maternity hospital that responds to the diverse family structures and values of our patients. Our origin lies in accompanying the “story” of every life born at this clinic and every family welcoming it.

Features of Tokyo Birth Clinic

We are pleased to introduce the features of Tokyo Birth Clinic. Our services are diverse and continually expanding, with new additions made every day. We are sincerely encouraged by the feedback we receive from our patients during both outpatient visits and hospitalization, and we humbly accept these voices as ideas for becoming an even better clinic. Moving forward, we are committed to supporting your well-being in every way possible.

Prime Location in Tokyo

Our clinic is the first to open as an obstetrics and gynecology facility offering 24-hour epidural delivery in Kami-Osaki—a hilly area within the Yamanote Line circle, often referred to as the five hills of Jonan: Gotenyama, Ikedayama, Shimazuyama, Hanabusayama, and Yatsuyama. The area surrounding the clinic is lined with embassies, and, despite being in the city center, it is also blessed with greenery, located just a five-minute walk from the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum. When you visit, we encourage you and your family to enjoy the soothing greenery.

Multilingual Support

As a clinic located in the heart of Tokyo—a world metropolis—we offer 24-hour, 365-day consultations in English, Chinese, and Spanish to ensure that patients whose native language is not Japanese can receive medical care with confidence.
*For patients who require consultation in a language other than English, please contact our clinic directly.

Safe and Comfortable Childbirth

Our skilled and experienced staff ensure the safety and well-being of both the patient and the baby. All staff members are working together daily with the goal that you will come to regard our clinic as “Tokyo Birth Clinic: A tradition of Trust and Reliability.”

A Uniquely Located Clinic in Tokyo Offering 24-Hour Epidural Delivery

Our pain management is administered by a qualified anesthesiologist (a physician specializing in anesthesiology), ensuring effective pain relief. In the rare event of an emergency C-section, the anesthesiologist is ready to administer the anesthesia quickly.

Accommodating Scheduled Induction and Planned Epidural Delivery

In the case of planned epidural delivery, the date of delivery can be set to fit your family’s circumstances. You can choose your baby’s birthday or coordinate with your family to attend the birth.

3D/4D Ultrasound at Every Prenatal Check-up

We utilize the latest ultrasound diagnostic equipment, the GE Voluson Expert22, which has a proven track record even in university hospitals. We perform 3D/4D ultrasounds at every prenatal check-up, allowing you to view your baby’s face in 3D and 4D images and videos.

“Baby Visit Echo” Outside of Check-up Days

For patients, seeing the baby’s profile or face via ultrasound during prenatal check-ups is one of the greatest joys of pregnancy. However, prenatal check-ups only occur once every few weeks until the final month of pregnancy. Sometimes, even if you look forward to your check-up, the baby’s position might prevent you from seeing their face. To meet the demand for “I want to see my baby more,” our clinic allows you to visit your baby even outside your regular prenatal check-up days. This service is available to patients who do not receive their prenatal check-ups at our clinic, and you may use it as many times as you wish.

Cosmetic Sutures to Minimize C-Section Scars

Patients scheduled for a C-section have the option to have the incision sutured by a cosmetic medical specialist—a plastic surgeon—to minimize the visibility of the scar.
*Please note that we may not be able to accommodate this request depending on the day of the week the surgery is performed or in the event of an emergency C-section.

Shuttle Service to the Clinic

Our nearest stations are Shirokanedai Station on the Tokyo Metro Namboku Line and the Toei Mita Line, as well as Meguro Station and Gotanda Station on the JR Yamanote Line, all of which are within a five-minute walk from the clinic. However, upon request, you may use our complimentary hire car shuttle service, safely driven by specialized staff, from the station to the clinic.
We utilize environmentally friendly vehicles for our shuttle service, including electric vehicles (EVs), plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), and hybrid vehicles (HRVs). The LEXUS LM used for the shuttle features automatic sliding doors for the rear seats, allowing you to enter without stooping. The interior is spacious and includes independent, power-reclining seats, offering a comfortable space as relaxing as your own living room. The cabin air is kept clean by releasing Nanoe X from the air conditioning vents.

*Please be advised that the model of the shuttle vehicle may be subject to change depending on the time of your visit. Thank you for your understanding.

*A reservation is required to use the service.

Rare On-Site Parking for Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinics in Tokyo

Our clinic features flat parking spaces that can accommodate SUVs and heavy luxury foreign cars. You can park with peace of mind, whether you are visiting for an outpatient appointment, or coming for admission or discharge. The entrance on the parking lot side faces a garden. Please use the pleasant pathway lined with beautiful grass and flowers.

A Private, VIP Exclusive Entrance

Upon request for outpatient visits, we offer a dedicated pathway that allows you to receive consultation without being seen by other patients, tailored to your needs. Please feel free to inquire.

Comprehensive Security System

All of our patient rooms are private. We regularly update the room specifications and furnishings, including the curtains, to maintain a luxurious, yet impeccably clean environment. Please feel assured that you will have a comfortable and safe stay during your hospitalization.
Furthermore, our clinic has installed surveillance cameras for crime prevention, covering both the interior (outpatient area, nurse station, newborn care areas, and patient floor hallways) and the exterior surrounding the clinic property. We have also contracted with a security system that provides a 24-hour emergency dispatch service (As the SECOM Meguro branch is located only one minute away by car, rapid response is guaranteed in case of an emergency). To protect the safety and peace of mind of our patients and their families, we have closely consulted with the security company and installed alarm sensors and surveillance cameras both inside and outside the facility. Our clinic is committed not only to responding to incidents but also to implementing proactive measures and strategies to prevent issues before they occur, in collaboration with security specialists.

No Restrictions on Visiting During Your Stay

There are no limits on the number of visitors during your hospitalization. Visiting is possible 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Visitors arriving at night should use the intercom at the clinic entrance to call the room number of the admitted patient directly. Entry for visitors is permitted after the patient has performed a security release operation themselves.

Smart Appointment, Check-In, Calling, and Payment

Our clinic has digitized the consultation ticket. This helps ensure a smoother check-in on the day of your visit. You can make, change, or cancel reservations 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, using our dedicated app. The app also features an information function that lets you receive reminders as your appointment day approaches. Furthermore, the app predicts your consultation time in real-time based on the current situation on the day of your appointment, even if you are waiting outside the clinic. Automatic notification emails and app push notifications alert you when your consultation time is near, minimizing your waiting time for the examination.

Transforming Wait Time into a Moment of Calm

To make your wait more comfortable, we offer an on-site CAFÉ and a multi-purpose room. At the CAFÉ, you can enjoy freshly baked bread, pastries, and a variety of beverages. In the multi-purpose room, you can enjoy musical performances or watch videos with your baby, utilizing the premium Bang & Olufsen audio system for a calming and enriching prenatal experience.

Image source: Bang & Olufsen Official Website

While we have an in-clinic monitor to display the consultation order, a notification will also be sent to your smartphone when it is your turn, allowing you to wait comfortably, both inside and outside the clinic. To help you enjoy staying outside the clinic, we have prepared a CAFÉ MAP of the surrounding area. Please feel free to ask our staff for a copy.

Convenience of Post-Consultation Payment

We accept cash and major credit cards (American Express, Diners Club, VISA, MasterCard, and JCB), as well as QUICPay. Register your credit card in the app during your initial visit. You can use our Smart Payment service, which lets you return home immediately upon leaving the examination room without waiting to settle the bill. A notification regarding the final payment amount will be sent to your registered credit card at a later date. Please review the details of this notification to complete the payment.

Personalized, Detailed Medical Care and Service for Each Patient
— Our Goal: A Maternity Resort Experience —

The delicious cuisine provided during your stay is one of the standout features of our clinic. Our meals are prepared by a dedicated, exclusive chef—a rarity for an obstetrics and gynecology clinic—who pours their skill and passion into every dish. You can enjoy delicious cuisine crafted from seasonal ingredients every day.

Furthermore, we offer a special Celebration Dinner after delivery, featuring the chef’s original course menu, which is visually stunning and highly “Instagrammable.” The tableware used for this course was created through a collaboration between our clinic and the prestigious, Imperial Warranted porcelain brand, Okura Art China. The dishes are based on the collection used for receiving state guests at the Kyoto Imperial Palace, but feature our clinic’s unique design motif: the olive tree.

Additionally, we have an in-house bakery. Both inpatients and outpatient visitors can enjoy freshly baked, delicious bread. The outpatient area and the CAFÉ are connected by an atrium, ensuring the clinic is always filled with the aroma of freshly baked bread.

Our Clinic’s Dining

A Special Dish to Heal the Body and Satisfy the Soul

At Tokyo Birth Clinic, we are as absolutely committed to the quality of our cuisine as we are to the quality of our medical care. The meals you enjoy during your stay are meticulously prepared by our exclusive, first-rate chefs, each with extensive experience in Japanese, Western, and Chinese cuisine. We consistently pursue a quality that surpasses that of a fine restaurant, meticulously balancing postpartum nutritional needs while focusing on visual beauty, delicate flavors, and rich aromas. We are dedicated to delivering a “memorable dining experience” that overturns the traditional image of “hospital food,” all with your safety and comfort in mind.

Your Postpartum Celebration Dinner: A Luxurious French Full Course to Honor New Life

As a reward for yourself after the monumental event of childbirth, Tokyo Birth Clinic offers a French full-course Celebration Dinner. The menu changes seasonally and features an authentic course structure, meticulously prepared from appetizer to dessert, using ingredients personally selected by our chef. This dining experience is highly praised by our patients, who describe it as “feeling just like a high-end restaurant.” If you wish, you are welcome to enjoy the meal together with your family. We carefully craft each dish with the belief that the meal will serve as a lasting culinary memory of one of the most significant moments in your life.

About the Building

The building’s design was handled by Jun Mitsui & Associates Inc. Architects, a firm involved in the architecture of Azabudai Hills, the Apple Store Omotesando, and Haneda Airport (International Terminal). Our Clinic Director, Sohshi Ushimaru, states, “The building’s atmosphere maintains the trust required of a hospital, yet it has a refined and beautiful structure that prevents one from feeling that they are in a hospital, both from the exterior and upon entering.” The director also notes, “As a luxury obstetrics clinic in the great city of Tokyo, we aimed for a world-class finish. We took time to decide every single element: the architectural design, construction materials and paintwork, the in-clinic curtains, furniture, interior coordination, the types of plants for the garden, and the centuries-old olive tree that serves as our symbol.” The interior boasts a chic atmosphere while being bathed in natural light, making it bright and evoking the warmth of wood.

Arup, a London-based company, was responsible for the building’s structural design. Arup is widely regarded as the world’s No. 1 structural engineering firm for buildings. It is no exaggeration to say that Arup is responsible for the structural design of specialized buildings worldwide. The highly technical, overhanging design of Tokyo Birth Clinic was realized through Arup’s expert calculations.

The photo below shows the retaining wall for the foundation of the Tokyo Birth Clinic building. The ground supporting the long, vertical, and horizontal structure of Tokyo Birth Clinic was managed by Ohba & Co., an urban development and civil engineering consulting company renowned for its retaining wall design, to withstand a major, direct-hit earthquake of over magnitude 8.0—a seismic event predicted to occur one day. This retaining wall construction, which took over a year, successfully enabled Tokyo Birth Clinic to be removed from the government-designated red zone. “To ensure a safe delivery and protect our patients and their families, even in the event of an emergency.” The Tokyo Birth Clinic was built with an absolute commitment to safety, going far beyond design considerations.

Clinic Overview

Beauty and Tranquility Experienced Through the Five Senses

The Tokyo Birth Clinic, although a medical institution, prioritizes creating a space that envelops both the mind and body, much like a luxurious private residence or an art museum. From the moment you step inside, the space is meticulously designed with attention to detail, including furnishings, art, plants, and lighting, ensuring patients feel, “It was a wonderful choice to come here.” At Tokyo Birth Clinic, we believe that a “beautiful space” is an integral part of the medical care that supports peace of mind, healing, and trust. As this is a special time for welcoming new life, we strive to be a place where patients can truly unwind. It is with this intention that we welcome everyone into an environment that has been perfected down to the smallest detail.

Refined Interiors and Art

From the entrance to the examination rooms, lounges, and delivery suites, the entire clinic features a unified design and is furnished with premium furniture and fittings. The paintings and artworks adorning the walls create the impression of a gallery rather than a medical space, fostering an atmosphere of extraordinary calm and tranquility.

Our Symbol Tree — A 300-Year-Old Olive —

A centuries-old olive tree, over 300 years of age, stands tall at the clinic’s main entrance, silently watching over the facility as its symbol. This olive tree symbolizes “peace” and “fruitfulness,” making it a fitting presence at this location where new life begins. We hope that patients and their families feel reassured and strengthened every time they look upon it.

A Tranquil Garden Featuring Seasonal Blooms

Outside the large windows surrounding the clinic, a garden extends, colored by flowers that show the changing expressions of the four seasons. The design ensures year-round greenery and blooms—such as cherry blossoms in spring, lavender in early summer, cosmos in autumn, and fir trees in winter—adding gentle color to the time spent in the hospital. Organic herbs and lemon trees are also planted in the garden, and their fragrance and green scenery convey a soothing, natural rhythm.

Stained Glass and the Daily Presence of Fresh Flowers

Stained glass is installed in various parts of the clinic to capture soft light, which illuminates the walls and floor, depending on the time of day. Furthermore, fresh flowers, overseen by the Clinic Director in collaboration with flower artist Nicolai Bergmann, decorate the clinic, with seasonal arrangements delivered weekly. The scent and color of the flowers gently soothe the hearts of everyone who visits the clinic.

Outpatient Waiting Room Where You Can Wait Warmly

The cold air transmitted through windows on a cold winter day can cause the body to chill. We have installed specialized heaters to prevent cold air from reaching patients while they wait, keeping them warm in the outpatient area. This heater warms the cold air that flows in, ensuring that even if you stay on the sofa by the window, your shoulders and lower body will remain warm.

Services Available During Outpatient Waiting Time

Using Our Clinic’s Second Floor CAFÉ
We offer a variety of cakes, baked goods, bread, and beverages, including café lattes, all crafted by our Chef Patissier, who previously served at “Lecrin” in Ginza, a restaurant renowned as a legend in the culinary field. Please enjoy the flavor that gained widespread popularity and the deep trust of notable figures in the sports and entertainment worlds, even after the chef opened his own restaurant overseas.

Esthetic and Head Spa Services
During hospitalization, we offer a “special esthetic treatment” to address full-body postpartum fatigue and the pelvis, as well as a “special head spa” featuring organic amenities from Italy. Outpatient patients can also use the maternity esthetic and head spa services, excluding abdominal treatments, during pregnancy.

Our Commitment to Room Comfort and Ambiance

Our Commitment to In-Room Bedding Quality

To achieve a faster postpartum recovery, our clinic exclusively features beds and mattresses from the luxury bedding manufacturer TEMPUR. Specifically, we have selected the “ProLuxe” mattress—the top-tier model within TEMPUR’s premium mattress line, the TEMPUR-Pro Mattress Series—for every room. This innovative material, initially developed by NASA scientists for use on the Space Shuttle, delivers an unparalleled sleeping experience during your stay. The moment you lie down, the billions of ultra-sensitive new cells in the mattress instantly react to your body shape, weight, and temperature, adapting and conforming to every part of you. Your body will feel magically yet entirely supported, ensuring you remain thoroughly relaxed throughout your entire hospitalization.

While this premium mattress is 30 cm thick, the bed’s overall height was specially adjusted after repeated verification between the Clinic Director and pregnant patients. The height is set to make it easy to sit down and stand up, whether you are pregnant or postpartum. Furthermore, the beds are electric and feature a reclining function, allowing for both a massage function and a zero-gravity position. The Director’s commitment to selecting the finest bedding stems from his desire for you to “heal your exhausted body immediately after delivery using the best beds and mattresses, thereby achieving the quickest possible recovery of your physical strength.”

Hotel-Grade Bedding

We have carefully selected bedding—including our futons, pillows, and sheets—made from materials that feel pleasant against the skin and are also adopted by five-star hotels worldwide. You can enjoy a comfortable stay with spotless linens throughout your hospitalization. Furthermore, we provide original bedding tailored to the season, ready to welcome both you and your family.

Rooms Warmed from the Floor Up with Complete Radiant Heating

We provide original slippers in every room, but to ensure you stay warm from the floor up, even on cold winter days, all patient rooms are equipped with radiant floor heating. You will feel a particularly comforting warmth in areas where you walk barefoot, such as around the wash basin and bathroom.

In-Room Refrigeration

Refrigerators that cool drinks effectively often produce noticeable operational noise. Conversely, silent models sometimes fail to cool beverages sufficiently. For our patient rooms, we have adopted a model that not only cools drinks thoroughly—even on the hottest summer days—but also ensures high sound insulation, allowing you to relax during your stay. Paying close attention to every detail for your comfort is the core of Tokyo Birth Clinic’s commitment.

In-House Amenities

The in-room amenities you used during your stay were among the items our Clinic Director was particularly committed to. We offer a selection of amenities sourced from around the world — Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa — so you can choose your preferred brand. We also rotate our featured brands on a seasonal basis. In our outpatient area, we have provided a dedicated space where you can sample each brand. We encourage you to take your time and make your selection before your hospitalization.

Argan oil is a rare, natural oil extracted from the fruit of the argan tree, which grows in the argan forest on the northern edge of the Sahara Desert in southwestern Morocco. At the same time, the antioxidant properties of Vitamin E are known to offer anti-aging benefits. The argan oil used at our clinic also contains Vitamin A, Vitamin E, and Omega-6 fatty acids. Its anti-aging properties not only hydrate the skin but also help keep it supple and soft, while effectively reducing the appearance of aging. — Carthusia —
Why CARTHUSIA? (click to expand)

Carthusia is a fragrance brand originating from the island of Capri, Italy, with a history dating back to 1380. The brand’s entire story began when monks at a Capri monastery noticed a mysterious sweet fragrance emanating from a flower vase used for floral arrangements. This tradition, which has been passed down for over 600 years, is still observed to this day, with every production step, including bottling and packaging, meticulously executed by hand by master artisans. Upholding these inherited, age-old techniques, Carthusia perfumes were exclusively handmade and produced in limited quantities. They were so rare that they were not available to the general public in Italy until 2002 and were often referred to as a “phantom” brand. The scent of this amenity line blends the freshness of newly picked lemon leaves with the comforting notes of green tea, enveloping you in the liberating sensation of a sun-drenched Mediterranean sky. As time passes, the initial citrus and green tea notes evolve into a clean, fresh aroma of black tea and white musk. Carthusia also operates a boutique in Azabudai Hills.

Postpartum Urinary Incontinence Treatment

EMSELLA Treatment for Urinary Incontinence

Reclaiming your postpartum wellness and confidence starts from the pelvic floor. Many women who have gone through childbirth experience the issue of urinary leakage after delivery—that sudden, uncomfortable feeling when they cough, sneeze, jump, or laugh. This may be a natural physical sign of loosening of the pelvic floor muscles. At Tokyo Birth Clinic, we have introduced EMSELLA, a non-surgical, painless treatment device for urinary incontinence that is performed while fully clothed, specifically for postpartum women.

What is EMSELLA?
EMSELLA utilizes High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology, an advanced method for strengthening the pelvic floor muscles that has been adopted in over 70 countries worldwide. This technology stimulates the deep pelvic floor muscles intensely. By simply sitting in the chair while fully clothed, a single treatment session induces muscle contractions equivalent to approximately 11,000 Kegel exercises—all of which occur unconsciously. As a result, EMSELLA is expected to improve postpartum urinary leakage, tighten the vagina, stabilize the pelvic floor, and even lead to better posture and an enhanced quality of sexual life.

Features of the Treatment

  • Sit fully clothed during the treatment
  • A quick treatment session of approximately 28 minutes
  • No pain or downtime
  • Effective for rehabilitation after episiotomy or Cesarean section

Our Initiatives

Cleaning Activities Around the Clinic

Our staff collectively performs cleaning activities around the clinic every day. We strive to be a clinic that contributes to local beautification in every way we can.

Support for Staff to Balance Parenting, Family, and Work

Our clinic has introduced a reduced working hours system for staff members raising children of pre-school age, shortening their prescribed working hours. We also provide a family allowance to staff supporting children under 18. Driven by the Clinic Director’s desire for staff to prioritize time with their families, staff raising preschool children are eligible for 5 days of special paid leave per year (called “Suku-Suku Leave”). Other special leave includes a system that allows staff to take time off for their own birthdays and those of family members (spouses and minor children).

As part of our efforts to create a workplace environment that supports working parents, we are exploring the establishment of a free, in-house daycare facility.

Clinic Location and Surrounding Facilities

Tokyo Birth Clinic is located in the Kami-Osaki area of Shinagawa-ku. While the name Kami-Osaki may be unfamiliar to some, this area includes Hanafusa-yama, one of the “Gonan Gozan” (Five Hills of Jonan). Within a five-minute walk of the clinic is the former residence of Empress Emerita Michiko, now a beautiful public park called the “Nemunoki Garden” (Silk Tree Garden). The garden features plants mentioned in the Empress Emerita’s poems, making it a very soothing place to visit. It is one of the places we especially recommend visiting when you come to the clinic. The surrounding area also hosts many foreign embassies; the Royal Thai Embassy is next door to the clinic, and the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia is directly across the street.
