Planned Epidural Delivery — The Option to Prepare Your Baby’s Birth with Peace of Mind —

While childbirth is a natural process, modern medicine allows you to welcome it in a "more secure way." Our clinic actively incorporates Planned Epidural Delivery as a method that achieves not only pain reduction but also safety and emotional composure during labor. Planned delivery is, of course, possible for first-time mothers.

About Planned Epidural Delivery

It is a delivery method where the birth date is set in advance, and anesthesia is used to alleviate pain. It is an option that respects the natural process while providing the peace of mind that comes with being “prepared for birth.” A Planned Epidural Delivery sets the delivery date in advance after confirming that the patient’s and the baby’s conditions are stable. Anesthesia is also prepared accordingly. You are admitted before labor begins, and pain is alleviated using epidural anesthesia under the management of an anesthesiologist.

Benefits of Planned Epidural Delivery

For a safe, secure, and highly satisfying childbirth experience.

  • The delivery date can be set in advance, making it easier to mentally prepare and coordinate family schedules.
  • The anesthetic procedure can be started in a calm environment before labor pain begins, minimizing anxiety about pain.
  • Physical exhaustion is minimized, resulting in a smoother postpartum recovery.
  • High medical safety is maintained by a team of physicians, midwives, and anesthesiologists certified and specially trained in painless delivery.
  • Suitable for those with an intense fear of labor pain or past trauma.

About Our Planned Epidural Delivery

At Tokyo Birth Clinic, pain relief is available from the start of labor. Starting pain relief only after labor pain has intensified does not occur with our Planned Epidural Delivery.

Thorough preparation from the late stages of pregnancy

  • Consult with a physician regarding a planned epidural delivery.
  • The delivery date is determined through consultation with the physician based on the patient’s preference.
  • The admission date is set for the day before the planned delivery.
  • On the day of admission, labor induction begins.

Available for first-time mothers

  • Pain relief is administered at the patient’s preferred timing.
  • Family attendance at the birth is possible (*Children can also be present).
  • Standard postpartum care and newborn management are conducted after the delivery.

For those who are anxious: Painless Delivery Classes

To transform “anxiety because I don’t know” into “understanding and peace of mind because I know.” We hold a Painless Delivery Class (once a month, reservation required) taught by an obstetrician and an anesthesiologist for those who “want to know more details” or “want to understand the risks fully.” We desire that you choose your method of childbirth with complete confidence. Please feel free to participate.

Our Fees

Planned Epidural Delivery is a self-pay medical service. We will inform you of the cost in advance.

Since Planned Epidural Delivery is an elective medical service, the painless delivery fee and planned management fee are charged separately from the standard delivery fee. You may be eligible for a subsidy of up to 100,000 yen through the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s painless delivery cost subsidy program. Details will be provided during your consultation or at the reception desk.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

QHow is the delivery date determined?
AThe safe date is determined through a comprehensive assessment by the physician, considering the baby’s and mother’s health status, gestational week, and the condition of the cervix, in consultation with the patient.
QIs a Planned Epidural Delivery possible for first-time mothers?
AYes. First-time mothers can choose this option if the pregnancy is progressing smoothly.
QWhat happens if labor starts early?
AIf spontaneous labor starts before the scheduled date, we will switch to epidural delivery whenever possible. Please consult us in advance.
QDoes painless delivery affect the baby?
AThe anesthesia used has minimal impact on the baby and is a highly safe method. It is chosen by many expectant mothers worldwide.
QWill it prolong labor or lead to a Cesarean section?
AIn only a few cases does painless delivery slow labor, and the physician will respond appropriately as needed.
QCan I suddenly switch to painless delivery on the day of birth if I initially planned a natural birth?
APainless delivery is fundamentally based on advanced planning. To ensure you receive painless delivery safely, you are required to attend the Painless Delivery Class within the Childbirth Preparation Classes (Mothers’ Class) to deepen your understanding of the procedure. While we will accommodate urgent changes in patient preferences for a natural birth whenever possible during labor, we generally recommend advance consultation.
