Painless Delivery (Epidural) — The Option for Childbirth That Transforms “Fear” into “Peace of Mind” —

Childbirth is a special moment in life. However, it is common for expectant mothers to feel, "I am afraid of giving birth," or "I am anxious about enduring the pain." At Tokyo Birth Clinic, we empathize with these feelings and offer painless delivery as a safe and highly satisfying childbirth option. Our clinic is the first one within the Yamanote Line circle to offer painless delivery. With a physician always on site, we provide 24-hour epidural delivery, which is rare in Tokyo. Therefore, even if labor begins in the middle of the night, we can start the painless delivery procedure. The thought, "There's no anesthesiologist at night, so I have to endure the pain until morning," will not happen at Tokyo Birth Clinic.

About Painless Delivery

Painless delivery is a method to alleviate pain and welcome your baby with peace of mind. “Painless delivery” is a method of proceeding with childbirth while alleviating labor pain using anesthesia. While the pain is not reduced to absolute zero, most patients say, “It was much easier than I imagined.” It is also noted that the pain of contractions is reduced to one-tenth with painless delivery. We use a highly safe anesthetic method called “Epidural Anesthesia,” which is administered by an anesthesiologist at the appropriate time.

Benefits of Painless Delivery

Painless delivery is a childbirth option that is gentle on both the mind and body.

  • Alleviates the intense pain of labor, allowing you to approach childbirth with a calm mind.
  • Reduces physical exhaustion, leading to faster postpartum recovery and a smoother physical recovery necessary for childcare.
  • Effective even when pain reduction is medically desired, such as in cases of high blood pressure or heart disease.
  • Reduces the patient’s stress, helping to stabilize the necessary oxygen supply to the baby.

About Our Painless Delivery

A safe and secure team that has technical expertise

  • Obstetricians and anesthesiologists work together to prioritize patient safety.
  • Performed primarily as a planned delivery (Painless delivery is also possible if you prefer to wait for labor to start).
  • Performed by a team of physicians and midwives who have completed special training and obtained certification for painless delivery.

A system that provides 24-hour coverage

  • Once labor begins, the pain-relieving medication is started at the patient’s preferred timing.
  • Family attendance is possible (Children can also be present).

For those who are anxious: Painless Delivery Classes

To transform “anxiety because I don’t know” into “understanding and peace of mind because I know.” We hold a Painless Delivery Class (once a month, reservation required) taught by an obstetrician and an anesthesiologist for those who “want to know more details” or “want to understand the risks fully.” We desire that you choose your method of childbirth with complete confidence. Please feel free to participate.

Our Fees

Painless delivery is a self-pay medical service. We will inform you of the cost in advance.

Since painless delivery is an elective service, an additional fee is charged in addition to the standard delivery fee. If our clinic is designated as an eligible medical institution for the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s painless delivery cost subsidy program, eligible patients can receive a subsidy of up to 100,000 yen. Details will be provided during your consultation or at the reception desk.

QCan I suddenly switch to painless delivery on the day of birth if I initially planned a natural birth?
APainless delivery is fundamentally based on advanced planning. To ensure you receive painless delivery safely, you are required to attend the Painless Delivery Class within the Childbirth Preparation Classes (Mothers’ Class) to deepen your understanding of the procedure. While we will accommodate urgent changes in patient preferences for a natural birth whenever possible during labor, we generally recommend advance consultation.
